Crazy Ass Cabbette

Bright eyed and bushy tailed, I was out the door to my cab at 5:30am Monday morning. I should've known something was amiss when the cabbie was parked in the middle of the street, as if I could be strolling out of Ruth's Chris instead of the apartments. She got right to the point - she was tired, she was out of gas, and she'd like to have my autograph because her boss told her I was famous.

The conversation moved on quickly after I assured her I was not making 30 minute eggs in the backseat, to more political topics like the streetcars coming to Cincy. "Why is one going in the ghetto?", she asked. Then, using her best vocal range, she proceeded to mimic a crackhead with a needle, a tranny holding a man's hand and a prostitute, all on one street car, all upsetting her faux child Marie. Valid points.

We moved on - now she was asking me if I get more attention with long hair or short hair. She has grown hers out natural, but it's braided and she doesn't want the wrong attention. She's waiting till her boyfriend gets out of jail - he's been locked up 2 years, one year left - and then she's going to get her hair relaxed. She is very sexually frustrated, even with the video visits they're allowed to have every 30 min. "I go off on him about the slightest things and then "ughhhh" you know?"

I know, lady. I do.

Now we've moved on to celebrities: Beyoncé is getting all naked these days. Talking about surfing like she's in California. Talking about her sex life in that new video... I have no idea what video she's referring to, but I did get in a good point about her long hair getting more attention than the other DC girls' back in '99.

It wasn't until the "discreet" roll down of the window in the 20 degree weather that I realized Cool Mom cabbie was a little gassy, and I needed out immediately.

While I waited for Cool Mom Cabbette to get gas... which she later paid me back for, out of her butt.
Please note hot-wired meter...

Recap of My Month Long Bender

Conscious decision to enjoy my weeks off during the holiday to unpack, organize, and explore Cincinnati and make some new friends in the process.  All while unplugging from this bad boy.

Without further a do, my December bender, in review:

Went to frigid Bengals games (twice).
Got harassed by large man behind us sick of the selfie-cam in his face, hence the photo of us in the bottom right.

Braved the latest Hobbit.  Unsure what part of the 14 part "trilogy" we are now on.
They are clearly all the same, and all entertaining nonetheless:
Hobbits fulfill little-people fetishes, Orlando bats for the other team, Dumbledore visits from Hogwarts.

Missed the Santacon memo.
Preparation have begun for next year.

Found Finnley a friend.
Meet Bertha, my new pet pelt.

Regretted not purchasing Galaxy Cat Pants from Target.

Reunited with roomie and friends from freshman year at UPenn!

Met up with my cousin and her bf in NYC!
Learned what it's like to fly out of not-Atlanta.

Saw the Nutcracker and washed it down with some amazing ice cream.
Added ice skating to our Cinci bucket list.

Checked out the home rival game of Xavier - Univ of Cincinnati.
They serve beer, so I don't know who won.

Celebrated Christmas our way, with meat, cheese and booze (also the traditional Ray crab bisque!)
The underage kid at the package store assured me Fireball + Rum Chata are what the kids drink these days...

First bathroom stall selfie!
Added "maturity" to my 2014 Resolution list.

Explored Mt. Adams (patio bar).

Pre and post-gamed our NYE celebrations with these bad boys.
Toasted NYE at a delicious Italian place in OTR.
I do consider myself cooler because I know what OTR means and you don't.

Brought in the New Year with new friends, our next door neighbors!
Vowed never to return to the Cinci casino for fear of catching bankruptcy and airborne herpes.

Killed another animal for my new Eskimo jacket.
What did this fox say?  Nothing his grandmother would be proud to hear.

Got stuck in the airport for 8 hours trying to get to an engagement party I co-hosted for my childhood bestie.
Made some new friends [on my iPad].
Finally arrived to be greeted by this fool, unsure where the people driving the jetway were.
Waited another 30+ min for them to page someone to attach us to the airport.

Visited the gorgeous Raleigh outdoor museum, including Rodin sculpture garden for bff's engagement photos.
Not stealing her thunder, so I won't post any... but wow.  What a location and what a gorgeous couple!  Will link once she posts!

Role Reversal: Hubs Has Left the Building

My current job requires that I travel 4 days a week, every week, to broad and exciting places like Birmingham, AL for a client.  But also NYC.  (I've only been doing it for a year and a half... hypothetically there will be more snazzy stops.)

At first, being on the road was a difficult idea to grasp.  Hubs was not a hubs yet, we were busy putting in offers on houses while I was interviewing for the job and he was busy trying to come up with a "rest of our lives together" speech.  So there was a lot going on and bouncing out of the house for a week at a time was just kind of an "add it to the list" item of things I had to learn to adjust to.  The real adjustment was likely what was going on at home though.

When I did eventually land the job and start my Monday treks to the land of Birm and Ham, Patrick was left with a brand new house and a needy puppy who was used to lunch time walks and someone at home at 5:30pm.  We were used to living in separate apartments and all of a sudden had a huge responsibility of cleaning, yard work, and making a brand new house a home.  New houses don't come with TP roll holders, or towel rods, or blinds... there was a lot to do and I only had weekends to help out.  So P had to learn to become Mr. Mom.  Getting off work earlier than he would have liked to attend to our puppy, the Monster.  Trash on Tuesdays.  Mail every day, not once a month.  There were quite a few blow outs where I would return from AL late on Thurs night and walk in to find straight chaos of a bachelor pad going on with mail scattered all over and dishes coming out of the sink.  It took a lot of convincing that when I got home for my 3 precious days, I didn't want to spend them cleaning up after the manimals when I already had baseboards to wash and bedrooms to paint, not to mention my DVR'd Revenge to catch up on and boxes of wine to consume.

But we eventually figured out a routine and that was fantastic.

This latest client has been different in that I've been able to work from Atlanta for the past few weeks.  No hotels.  Still the late nights, but with my own bed afterwards.  I get to cook.  I get to clean throughout the week instead of in a burst of cuss words and frustration on a hungover Sunday morning.  There are groceries in the fridge and now it's me that has to eat the leftovers.  This, too, was a weird thing to get used to.  I have a strict hotel-life-routine where my travel kit has all my essentials and I have my set things I do before bed and my workouts in the morning.  Being at home meant bedtimes were erratic, I'd forget to wash my face, I could putter around in the morning playing with the Monster or doing laundry.  It's taken a month for me to get back into a "normal" non-travel routine.  Which is now also fantastic.

This week, though, Hubs has stolen my routine.

He left this early morning for the airport to go to OH through Thursday.  I coached him on hotel points, gave him packing tips and sent him on his merry way with a solid "get the eff out now or airport security will be your final resting place."  I have no idea what to do with myself this week.  I think I've been in this house for max one night by myself.  The Monster and I have the world at our fingertips.  I have a moderately fresh box of wine, and a silly-full DVR.  I've pitched a slumber party idea chock full of holiday dramas like Love Actually and Elf.  I should be packing and cleaning the house.  I should be writing thank yous and addressing Xmas cards.

BUT.
I'm thinking it's finally my turn to be a house bum for the week.
PJs, Uggs, dirty dishes and unhealthy dinners, here I come.
Maybe even a bath!  I even have a bubble bath playlist, which has never been used for it's intended purpose!  Sike.  Too cold for bath time.  The impending frigidity that means removing oneself from the bath is not worth the effort it takes to get in in the first place.  Kind of like eating asparagus.  The risk is not worth the reward.

Insert clever gif images.

How do people find those?  Is there a gif catalog out there that pairs a fantastically clever, widely known 3 second bit of knee-slapping hilarity for every thought, or are the people posting those the same ones who know all those awesome movie one-liners that seamlessly fit into conversation and make the crowd go wild.  I have neither of these skills.  Here is an ecard instead.

Update: I just did recon.  No gif catalog discovered, but I did land a sweet Revenge clip.
A whole new world of possibilities has shown itself to me.  Prepare yourselves.

Virginia is for Lovahs

As you can tell from my previous posts, Hubster and I headed to Virginia for some good times with friends and family last weekend.  Between the Halloween festivities, wedding celebrations and Sunday supper with family, we squeezed in a little sight seeing and "us time" as well.

[Side note: every time I glance up and see the title of this, I think it says something else is for lovahs.  Which is also true, but that belongs on a totally different site...]

It's funny how being in a new place together makes everything so much more date-like.  In Atlanta when we want to try something new or visit a special place we usually call around and see who's free to multi-task our explorations with some good friend catching up.  One of the things I'm definitely looking forward to about moving to Cincinnati is getting to discover everything together, brand new and for the first time.  A coffee shop, a tourist attraction or even a new friend will all be new and something we did together, the first time.

We visited Monticello to learn about Thomas Jefferson - so many crazy things that guy did that I either never knew or just didn't care to store in my head...  Funny how much I refused to remember from middle school and am now paying big bucks to get re-taught in adulthood (adulthood... ick).  Like the fact that old TJ was 6'2" and lived to be in his 80s!  That's crazy for back then!  And then he kicked the bucket on the 50th anniversary of the 4th of July!  Then Monroe kicked his own a couple of hours later!  What?!

He made his house look like a museum so when all the random people would stop by to shake his hand (pre secret service apparently) they'd learn something about the Native Americans and the local environment.  Pretty cool stuff!  My favorite was the dumbwaiter he had installed... for wine!  Straight down to the cellar and back again to keep the booze flowing.  Good man.

Catching some piano jazz in the Atlanta airport pre-departure
As close to riding a bike as I've been this decade...
Monticello

A tree!

The nickel would be a much better form of currency if Patrick was on it too
The wine dumbwaiter!  Genius!
Stopped for a little wine and cheese at Jefferson Vineyard

Happy Fall!

Wine-O Wednesday: Cesari Amarone

Last week I had the good fortune to head to Ocean in Birmingham for a fabulous meal.  Awesome seafood - which totally does not go with the wine we paired with it, but honestly when you order a really good wine... who the hell cares?

We were looking for a bottle of Zinfandel that was no longer available, and the waiter suggested we take a look at an Amarone.  My ears perked up!  Let's .be serious, they perk up with any mention of wine... but especially one I've only had a handful of times and first in Italy.

I was introduced to Amarone by my very wonderful bestest bestie of the best, Theresa, who lives in Italy and is all things fabulous.  [And just married a hottie local Italian Stallion who is the sweetest man ever, and makes some ridiculous ridic risotto... and drives a vespa...  Besides the point...] I visited her in Verona a little over a year ago and one of the fun things we did was go on an awesome winery tour of a local vineyard where they make all their wine in an underground cave,  ZĂ˝mÄ“.  Ok, ok, that link is in Italian.  V
oglio vino dio bon!  Literally my only Italian language take-away... Babblefish it.

ZĂ˝mÄ“ in Verona, Italy

I too always forget monstrous bottles of vino in
wall-nooks in my hobbit-home.

I smuggled back some of this amazing olive oil
they make there too!

Enough wine for at least a week!
Side note: T is the middle hottie
One each, please!
I smuggled the mix of all their babies (graffiti Kairos one) and the second from the right- the Valpolicella Classica. Amarone was not in this gringo's price range after the damage I did to their meat and cheese industry.  And by "their," I mean Italy proper
Still waiting to drink the Kairos- occasions never seem special enough to toast to Theresa and her tour guide hubs, Andrea!

But back to this bottle: Cesari, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Veneto ‘07

91 Points
If you don't know about this amazing style of wine, it's a super intense flavor similar to a Zinfandel, made from dried grapes in the Valpolicella region in Veneto, a north-Eastern part of Italy.  The grapes are dried between 3 weeks and 3 months, then pressed and aged in barrels for at least 2 years.

I stole this from the website, obvi: "Amarone della Valpolicella Classico wines are rich, red amarone wines from the traditional classico viticultural zone of Valpolicella in Veneto, north-Eastern Italy. One of Veneto's most famous and prestigious wines, Amarone della Valpolicella has played a vital part in boosting the region's status in the wine world ... The early amorone wines were seen as mistakes – reciotos left to ferment for too long – but eventually the style gained recognition and respect.  Amorone comes from the Italian word amaro (bitter), completed with the –one suffix which denotes impressive size or volume.  When compared to the sweet recioto which the early amarones were supposed to be, it’s a logical translation."
It was just great.  It's so intense, so rich and fruity.  Some very earthy tones that the waiter described as tobacco leaves, but that seemed like a stretch - pretty sure it was just a Birminghamian southern addition.  Regardless, if you like big and bold with a lingering finish and a fully velvet mouth-feel (that will never seem appropriate), definitely give this bad boy a chance.

Or go visit my bestie Theresa in Verona; she'll give you the good stuff.  :)

Resolution Fail

Made it almost 48 hours into the New Year and already disobeying myself...  Oopses!  Wine, cheese and a not-so-early bedtime await...

But look what my awesome hotel in Birmingham delivered up for me in the New Year!

While I desperately miss my puppy, my fiance and my home every night that I'm away, there is something really nice about lounging in my pajiminies, watching the Sugar Bowl and sipping on my mini bottle of wine in my big king bed (feather free!) with no one but my onesie to talk to.  Which I do.  I blame the cheese...

Pretty much the whole food pyramid, right?  That counts for something...

"Road Warrior" Workout

Only six months in and I despise the term "Road Warrior" already.  What is that?  That implies those of us that frequent the skies/freeways are fighting some kind of magical battle with the travel Gods.  Which actually, may be kind of true...  Upon Googling, I found out there is an entire underworld of blogs and forums devoted to the topic.  There's even a website devoted to those of us who live out of a 22" x 14" x 9" closet and can happily exist for days, if not weeks, with only that and a good Platinum Lounge.

I have no right to gripe as I don't currently have to fly.  I can pack an entire bottle of contact solution right next to my pair of sharpened scissors without a care in the world.  I can even purchase a bottle of wine and bring home the remnants (remnants... silly concept) at the end of the week.  Anyone have leftovers?  Send them home with me!  No big deal Officer, I'm just smuggling half of Birmingham's best restaurants across state lines...

Which brings me to the real issue, which is the consumption of obscene quantities of undeniably delicious fare from distant lands.  Three times a day.  There are only so many lunch options within walking distance, and only so many driveable locations worth visiting.  And when you have the entire menu staring at you, it's just plain impossible to order a side-salad-add-chicken and smile through kale-coated teeth at the would-be heavenly treats at Gianmarco's or Chez Fonfon.  [Sidenote: behind Gianmarco's is their Wine Bar.  Retail wine prices with a corkage fee, and the full GM menu in a cutesy little shack where you eat around wine barrels.  Fabulous.]

So, jumping jacks and I have started a little romantic tryst.  I apologize each morning to my downstairs neighbors as I hop around in pajamas doing my routine.  Jumping jacks, crunches, push ups, the whole nine yards.  These are the best routines I've found, which I switch up and mess around with (read: unabashedly cheat) while trying to work off my jiggles in an effort to make caloric room for the absolute best thing in town, the elote asada at @elbarriobham (my fiance refers to it only as "the corn place" because I talk about it so much).  Mmmmm chipotle-cilantro-mayo drenched corn yummies...

Thursday blows most.
